Resolved Question: Recipe/food ideas while on detox!?!?

Hi there yahoo, i'm doing a detox to receive rid of my acne (trust me i've tried EVERYTHING else and i'm getting desperate...) and so i can't eat the following things: - sugar (if it is in something, tiny amounts are ok, must be one of the last ingredients (not 1-8)) - cow's milk (alternative dairy is fine!) - soy - iodized salt (i can have sea salt) - white flour or rice (i can have whole wheat, spelt, brown rice, etc.) - hydrogenated oils - fats - grease - aspartame/splenda/sucralose/any other artificial sweetener... (i can have honey and pure maple sugar) SO.... any suggestions on some meal ideas and snacks? the detox also suggests lots of organic foods so anything like that would be great! thanks! :)

Open Question: Baby food pouches "Ellas Kitchen, Plum Organics" etc.?

Does any one know if it is possible to buy these pouches unused, i.e to be able to reuse them myself? They are the pouches that are similar to the "Capri Sun" drinks pouches except that they have liquidised baby food in them. I would have thought that sports people (athletes, climbers, extreme sports) would be useing them for differtent things. Many thanx in advance.

Resolved Question: How many of you are the healthy organics you portray?

So many people post like they are these every organic, healthy, we cook every night parents and I wonder are that many of you really like that. I look it here and when i was in nb & b I am not. We receive some organic fruits and veggies. But, we eat out at least once a week, we have juice and have been know to receive quick food once a week too... Mainly chi fila but, i dont hate McDonalds. Amen to that V When we cook and eat out we always receive a veggie. If we have quick food, then we make sure to receive a fruit. Lol - my daughter eats better than I do as well. I just recently changed that. I have been making sandwiches or having leftover for lunch at work. Today i brought in a weeks worth of salad stuff for work too. pdooma - I wish we could cook homemade everynight, my husband gets home with our daughter about 545 and I receive in at 630. So has has been stuck cooking quick dishes with little to no effort, he is stuck on a job about 1.5 hours away from home. He used to grill almost everynight and i loved it. Grilled anything is good for me. BTW - I am not giving any TD, the fairys are out tonight.

Open Question: Can you point me to some resources for meat/poultry/dairy brand cruelty research on the web?

I am not vegetarian, but I recently started to become concerned about the animal products we consume. I saw a video of a dairy cow that was just awful. The abuse it showed was upsetting to me, and the filth that I saw was disgusting. Even if one does not care about animal welfare, the idea that a cow can be covered in its possess waste as we extract products for our possess consumption makes me wary of product quality. Even if I do decide to go vegan, I cannot force my husband to do it. So the next best thing is for me to make informed choices about which brands I will buy. I will never buy anything from Dean Foods, land o lakes or Horizon Organic again. I found cornucopia.org, and they have a rating system for organic dairies which has helped me a lot. I am looking for similar information on egg/poultry brands, pork and beef brands, and non-organic dairy brands. I can buy local for a lot of things, which means I could look with my possess eyes if the animals are tortured or dirty. I want to find out more about national brands though. I am not sure if I trust the peta organization for this nice of information, because they are biased toward not consuming animal products at every, and their propaganda seems to be intended to imply that every farms are dirty and neglectful. Any web links you can share would be appreciated!

Open Question: Three simple health questions, answer any of them please?

Ok so I started a new, healthier lifestyle based on no sugary drinks, fruits, nuts, vegetables and bike riding and I came across these 3 questions: 1. I recently got a batch of walnuts from my grandma (meaning they are 100% organic) and I started eating LOTS of them. The Internet said that they are really healthy and full of good fat, vitamins etc. I am wondering: such a tasty and healthy food HAS to have something bad in it, is it REALLY ok if i eat how many I want? 2. I always knew that energy drinks, sugar cubes etc. give you a short energy boost. I thought of eating a couple of sugar cubes before strenuous, continuous physical activity, but I still am confused about the ACTUAL period of time between swallowing them and getting the energy you need, except for the Placebo effect, which also works. 3. I started using toothpicks to clean my teeth quite often and I was wondering if it can damage my teeth somehow, as my teeth do have some problems Thanks, Alex

Open Question: Is it unhealthy to eat under 1200 calories a day if your eating healthy and not skipping meals or snacks?

I logged my eating today and heres what I came up with: Breakfast: Fruit salad [83 calories] (5 grapes, 4 straberry's, 2 prunes) I had intended to make something else with more protein in it, but didn't receive around to it, so that's why it was so tiny. Snack: Organic unsalted peanuts [160 calories] Baby Carrots [35 calories] Lunch: Salmon [170 calories] Snack: Daves Killer Bread/good seed and some raspberry jam [210 calories] Dinner: I haven't eaten yet, but I am just going to have an egg or something like that so that's about 70 calories. So I will have consumed 698 calories today, which sounds really tiny since I feel like I have eaten a healthy amount today. I have weird eating habits, I either eat really healthy like today and don't receive enough calories or else I binge on junk food and receive way to many calories:/ Is it ok to eat like that? Will my metabolism stay up since I am eating every day and not skipping meals?

Resolved Question: Which of the violations of the chicken farms in the salmonella case is considered the problem?

The FDA sited the chicken farm responsible for the salmonella outbreak for the following violations among others: - Live rodents and mice at the farms - Holes allowing wildlife access - Chickens tracking manure - Live flies - Wild birds flying in and out Organic eggs are gathered from free range chickens. every of these "violations" would be common with organic chickens. Voting Question: Question for organic moms?

Does organic grade B maple syrup have an expiration date? I bought some for my husband a long time ago because everyone kept telling me it tasted so much better than regular maple syrup you buy in grocery stores. He wasn't a fan of it, and I hate breakfast food so I think a total of a tablespoon was used out of the whole quart container. I paid $35 or so for it so I don't want it to go to waste, and I *swear* I heard the lady at the organic store say as long as you refrigerate it, it has no expiration date. I was going to give it away with a bunch of other food since we're moving in 2 weeks but I wanted to look if it's still safe to eat. There isn't one stamped anywhere on the container. Nah...Nowhere! I might tie Andy down and push some down his throat. If he's projectile vomiting by tomorrow then I guess I have my answer.

Voting Question: Baby led weaning - are these okay solids to start at 6 months?

I started with purees at 4 months, so technically am not baby led weaning, but plan to start finger foods at 6 months. Would these likely be okay, and not a horrible choking hazard? - banana - overcooked organic frozen veggie mix (corn, green beans, peas, carrots) - organic ground beef if they are not okay, I'll puree them, but I like the idea of going ahead and starting them on finger foods sooner rather than later. Seriously? Why would I need cloned beef? That is just a copy of another cow....

Voting Question: Does wiping at all mean you're not getting enough natural fiber?

I think it does, even if you're eating fried food I think you can still balance it with a lot of greens, bananas, apples, and raw nuts. I don't eat dairy or red meat anymore but on the days when I eat no meat or fish and a ton of organic food I barely need to wipe at every. so basically, pooping = good and wiping too much = not so good. poop not urine.

Voting Question: Pregnant and can't stop eating candy?!?!?

I am 21 weeks pregnant and although I have eaten generally very healthy while pregnant (organic and natural foods w/o preservatives), I have recently began to crave sugar and I've been eating Skor / Heath bars like they're going out of style. As candy bars go, they're not the absolute worst (Skor in particular) because the ingredients are generally natural with few additives, although far from health food. I try to justify it in my head because I need to gain weight (I'm quite thin), but I know I should control myself better and only have one or two a week instead of sometimes two a DAY like last week! What can I do to keep my cravings below wraps? Other, more healthy sweet stuff doesn't hit the spot quite the same lately. I feel so guilty for this recent addiction to junk. My baby does not need every of this sugar. FYI, I do take my prenatal vitamins and eat pretty healthily in general, although I don't tend to eat enough.

Resolved Question: What should I do for my 15th birthday?

Its in 95 days, december 2nd. Eheheh. Yes I know I am planning WAY ahead, but well I`m excited! :D This is what I was thinking, I dont like big groups so I would invite my best pal and hang out with her every day. My mom always gives me a $100 budget. I was thinking, pick Alannah up from work at 2, then go straight to bowling (2 games, roughly $16.50) That would take tops 2 hours, then me and her can go to The Bulk Barn (giant candy/baking/organic food store) and stalk up on that nights candy suppies. Then out to dinner, with the family so the bill isnt included in the $100. By now I have probably spent $30 of the $100. When we receive home, just hang out in my bastment, then cake (not included in the $100) and presents! :D Then order an XL Xcheese cheese pizza from 341. :P Eat that during the night, and when my parents and sister go to bed rent movies from ROD. (rogers on demand) Maybe watch 2 movies, afterwards, go down to the basement, tug an every nighter, and play legacy (card game just like sims we made up, it takes 2 hours xP ) and board games. sounds like a nerdfest i know, but we are just well not like the other camera whores that spend every of their time on the itnernet and at parties.... plus we like this:) So got any ideas that would make it even better? Thanks!: D oh and p.s no alcohol, k well maybe a little. And no drugs, she says shes not into that. OH and no were not going to the movies! OH!! i forgot to mention, the following morning were going out to breakfast, (not included in budget) and with the extra $50 leftover from the hundread im giving her $25 and I receive $25 + bday money and were going shopping! :D Im going thrifting! >:D

Voting Question: Baby led weaning question?

I started on homemade purees at 4 months, so am not technically doing baby led weaning, but plan on starting them on finger foods in a couple weeks when they are 6 months. Wondering if you can just heat up tiny portions of frozen foods? I know it works with frozen veggies and meats, but what about fresh pieces of clip up fruit? Seems like a banana is not going to freeze well, but anything special I need to do to peaches, apples etc. to freeze slices? Also, what do I have to do to avoid them choking? Since they have eaten very thick purees for over a month now, they chew pretty well, but I'm sure there are some foods to avoid besides hot dogs and whole grapes. What solids did you start your younger baby on? For now it is easier to have their foods be separate. In the future we will just give them what we are eating, but they eat organic and we don't so we have to work that out. I do organic because they don't know what causes autism. I just feel like if one of my kids does become autistic, I want to feel like I did everything I could to prevent it. I don't know that it causes it, I don't even really think it does, but like quitting smoking during pregnancy, this way if something goes wrong I know I tried. Why does baby food have to be cooked? I know they say that, but I think baby led weaning lets them eat raw fruit at least? What is the reason behind cooking the fruits and veggies for 6 months+? Is is something beyond a choking hazard?

Resolved Question: should a heartworm positive dog be given Heartworm preventative?

She was tested negative in the spring? and now in Sept. she has test positive? every this entire summer we give her preventative chewies! What difference does it make if we continue??? not sure I understand! She is very very old anyway. Not sure will survive the treatments..... 11 yrs.... They will test her kidneys and liver and look if treatment is a viable option. She seems very very healthy for her age. Will preventative measures create super drug resistance heartworm critters??? (bad for other dogs!) or WON"T IT just kill the babiy larvae , so they will not have a chance to grow into adults inside MY DOG?????? EH???? It seems like "DUH" nice of question. I hate my vet. THey suggest no (Specific brand) flea treatment on dog as it could KILL My cat! HA HA AND "THEY" suggest that I keep feeding the (Kidney rock and health issue,) expensive vet cat food to my cats? and not feed the cat meat????????? WHAT The HECK did the vet think my cat would eat out in the real world? In the wild? she would eat pure meat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO, I do NOT Like or trust this vet. i am going to go to a new vet, new opinions. I"m sorry I had to ask this question here. Thank you for your time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 PS> My cat is now getting 50% cat food (special vet food) and 50% meat. pure meat, no sodium. no additives, organic, glad cage free cow meat (as it is not predator meat, no risk of parasites, and it is COOKED MEAT). Cat needs some vitamins and calcium in the cat food (it is wet, not dry this time, vet prescrption. wet food is better than dry for his health condition.) He also has FIV, so, none of my critters have a very long life expectancy. They are tiny cats and only eat lb of meat per week.

Voting Question: Do I eat too much for breakfast?

On a typical morning, I will eat 1/2 cup dry old-fashioned oatmeal (150 cal), cooked in water, with 1 tablespoon organic almond nut butter (100 cal) , spices, and about 80-100 calories worth of dried fruit. Usually, it adds up to be probably 350-360 calories. I realize these things are healthy, but it just seems like NO ONE eats a real meal for breakfast anymore, so I'm wondering, is this too much food? I'm an active person who eats very sensibly, I'm just wondering.

Resolved Question: I believe my science teacher told me something wrong today in class?

I am in International Baccalaureate Program at my school so are science is pretty advanced. We were doing a lab on Calorimetry and were testing the calories in different foods. It involves lighting the food on flame beneath a beaker of 15 ml of water and measuring the change in temperature the open flame has on the water. We measured the mass of the marshmallows and almonds and stuff before lighting them aflame. Then we measured the ashes of the food after they burned. I found that the mass of the ashes was surprisingly less than the mass we started with. I was thinking Law of Conservation of Mass tells use matter is neither created nor destroyed so where did the matter go. I pondered and realized it was the smoke rising and was like how could I forget that. I told other students of my findings and my teacher blurted out I was wrong. He said the remaining matter was thermal energy in the form of calories. I was always taught previous to this that matter is only converted into matter in a reaction. It is not always directly into energy. I told my teacher that the mass of the smoke would equal the missing mass and he said that the smoke would have little effect on mass. He said most if not every the missing mass was now in the form of thermal energy instead of the smoke. My question is, is he right with the calorie deal or am I right with the smoke and conservation of mass. I think he looks down on me with disgust for one reason. I went to the ghetto middle school so he always objects what I have to say. He gets along real well with the wealthy white kids but not me the low class needy white kid. There is a little biased and prejudiced going on here. The other day we were talking about hydrocarbons and organic compounds and I was explaining word for word the difference between inorganic compounds with carbon and organic compounds. He called me wrong and looked at me with a level of disgust. When he went to explain it, it was very close what I had just said. Just because I spoke in a different context than him. I liked my old science teachers Mrs. Lane and Mrs. Reaves both always agreed with me accepted my input. I am a very huge nerd but I am discriminated against because I went to a non perfect middle school. Teachers always receive a prenotion about my abilities. I always find myself proving my intelligence. Your level of intelligence should not be measured by the clothes or money you have but by how well you adapt yourself and engage in new problems and answer questions. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

Resolved Question: How can i lose weight while I'm broke?

I'm 23 years old and weigh 240 lbs. I am 5'3. Now, I will say, I carry my weight fairly well. Most people are surprised if I tell them my weight or pants size (18). I visited a pal a few months ago who is extremely health conscious. She buys every organic, non processed, low fat/sugar foods. I stayed at her home eating her food for 3 weeks...and lost 12 pounds. I dont really excercise. (Unless you count chasing kids around at my home daycare excercising.) Now, heres the issue. I want to lose weight. I dont want to be a certain size or weigh a certain number, I just want to receive healthier. My fiance is also overweight, and I feel like we dont help each other. The problem is that we are broke. Im always behind on every bill, never have enough money for gas, and am barely putting food in the home. So the food we do eat is bad. Ramen noodles, 88 cent banquet dinners, mac n cheese, etc. I also work nights at a restaurant and tend to grab a burger or something there because its free. We applied for food stamps to help us until we can work out this job situation (which we should qualify for) but we wont know until the end of September. I want to start losing weight now! I cant afford the gym, I'm embarrassed to run in public, or to excercise period in front of people. The fact is, I am completely glad with myself the way God made me...I'm not glad with the way I made me. We are planning on starting a family and I dont want to bring my kids into the world setting them up for failure with 2 overweight parents. Advice, as well as grocery list suggestions would be awesome!!!

Resolved Question: Nutritionists - Is this enough to live healthy?

Oatmeal (not instant one), green vegetables (spinach, collard greens, mustard greens - basically leafy stuff), Fruits (I eat apples, oranges, banana, plum, cantaloupe, mangoes), fat free milk. I also like barley a lot. I spice things with paprika, turmeric powder, cumin seeds powder and salt. If it helps - I am a 32 year old male. I like to use low fat country crock stuff. I am not trying to be on a diet or something, I already have healthy weight. I am an athlete and require to be that way to make a living as I tutor an athletic sport. I am asking are these things enough to live on day to day basis? I don't mind repeating and eating the same food everyday. It doesn't bother me. I can't afford any of these items organic as of now but might do that later on. I grew up in a vegetarian family and still am vegetarian (don't eat eggs or anything with eyes!) Meat is not bad at every it's a religious thing and I don't want to change it. What would be a good source of healthy fat and proteins if I lack from what I described over. I lived on over described things for about two and a half months and felt nice, I haven't drifted much, I eat pizza or burritos two three times a week now.

Open Question: is organic food better for you to eat then genetically modified food?

I took a college english course this passed summer and we had to right an summary on GMO foods. For those of you who don't know about GM, GM (Genetically modified food) which deprives GMO which stand for Genetically modified organism. Well reading about it and watching a video I was thinking buying organic foods. I already eat organic which has nothing to do with recent recalled on eggs. For an final project in english we had write ten page persuasive paper and do an PowerPoint presentation on it so this girl in my class did one on shopping locally. I was literally thinking about it too until the recent recalled on the eggs due to salmonella outbreak. The eggs I eat where not from the producing facilities where the federal officials found the outbreak in Iowa however I am concerned about whether or not I should eat locally organic foods or GM (genetically modified food).

Resolved Question: Do you know if any stores in Flushing (11355) carry Timberwolf Serengeti Feline Diet cat food?

I got a whole list of pet stores on www.timberlandorganics.com in Flushing, but I called the stores, and the employees every said they have to make a special order for it and that's way to expensive so my parents won't agree to buy it. Do you know any stores that carry it in Flushing? I really want to buy Timberwolf Organics because its the cat food brand that doesn't test on animals, has the highest ratings, and put a lot of meat in its grain-free kibbles.

Open Question: A question about organic instant coffee.....?

I am reading a book which is very pro-organic foods...it is great on the whole. The author suggests switching to organic fresh ground coffee, rather than instant... I have found an instant coffee today which is organic (and fair trade)...I know that fresh is always better, but would organic instant contain any toxins that fresh organic coffee would not?

Open Question: Heart problems in a 22 year old female?

Alright, I went to my doctor yesterday because I've been experiencing a number of odd symptoms. After taking my blood pressure, they had me stand up and take it again, it dropped a good bit. The doctor then took a chest xray, did some blood work, did an EKG, and ordered an ultrasound of my heart friday. I feel like I'm too young for any of this. I'm a very healthy person. My diet is almost completely organic, no processed foods, no meat. Here is a list of my symptoms 1) Often after standing I black out, or lately even faint (pass out). 2) It's been a struggle everyday for a while just to receive out of bed because I feel completely drained of energy. 3) I'm losing weight rapidly without trying at every. I'm actually trying to gain my weight back, which isn't something a new mom usually complains about. I gained about 60 lbs during my pregnancy and lost it every plus an additional 24 lbs in 8 months. 4) I have a mass below my rib cage that doesn't hurt at every, it's just uncomfortable. You cannot feel it by touching my ribcage as it is below it, pressing against it. 5) I have 3 cavity fillings that have fallen out in the past 2 or 3 months. I know I should have gotten them fixed by now, but with a husband in the military and an baby it's difficult to find time. I've heard that tooth decay can guide to heart disease. Any ideas what this could be? I know it's a crazy list. I meant sonogram, not ultrasound.

Resolved Question: Can organic whole wheat pasta cause acne?

I ate brown rice (3/4 cup) with two pouched eggs, some salsa and mustard for breakfast. I bought some organic whole wheat pasta at Costco but I've been told to not eat ANY processed food because any processed food leads to acne. Is this true? I want to have a healthy lunch but not always eat the same complex carbs every the time.

Resolved Question: Organic food: How sad is it that I have to ask?

It's true, I may very well be an unusual case. I have medical reasons for not being able to eat foods with Bovine Growth hormones (a severe hormonal disorder caused by a case of prolactinoma that reoccurs if I start drinking milk or eating cheese from cows that have been given hormones to increase their milk production.) That being said I think that it is unhappy that it's even an issue. Shouldn't our food be as natural as possible ( after every humanity got by for thousands of years without a whole bunch of crap mucking up our edibles)? It only makes sense to me that our bodies would not be used to processing every those hormones and chemicals. It seems to me that chemical free hormone free food should be the standard instead of a healthy option only given to people with excess income. What happened to food standards? Thoughts?

Resolved Question: Should a good server know the details of my food?

Should a good server know the details of my food? I eat only free range, grass feed, organic beef with no BST, Hormone free dairy, free range poultry, organic vegetables, and no corn syrup/sucrolose excetera. If I am going to a fancy place to eat, should I expect my server to know if the food meets my dietary needs? My needs have been dictated to me because of a severe hormone condition...food like beef with growth hormones severely disrupt my life and cause me to have increase ovarian cysts and are seemingly increase my prolatinoma issue (a tiny benign tumor on my pituitary grand that causes an increase of prolatin making me lactate regardless of the fact that I am childless and not pregnant. These are just some of the more major effects of me eating the wrong thing. Lisa: Hormone free cheese is cheese made from milk cows that have not been given hormones to increase there milk production.

Open Question: Is it normal to feel tired when you change to a healthy diet?

I haven't been eating as well as I used to for at least a year & after getting engaged decided to receive back on the health wagon & lose some weight. The bad foods I indulged in were never quick food or highly processed food. Mostly wealthy french casseroles, good sourdough & homemade buttery baked goods. I have only been back on track for 5 days but I have been extremely lethargic. I wake up at 6:30 I work in an office for 8 hours, do 30 mins to 1 hour at the gym 4-5 days a week & I am often falling asleep sitting up on the sofa by 7pm! I am sure I am getting enough calories & by every rights I should be exploding with energy given I am eating so many organic green leafy veg & fresh fruit. Could it just be my body adjusting to a new diet? Eg of my diet (what I ate yesterday) Breakfast: 3/4 cup Quinoa & oat Porridge with 1 diced apple, 3 chopped raw almonds & skim milk Snack: a couple of pieces of celery Lunch: chicken salad consisting of 150g grilled chicken breast, 1.5 c arugula, 1/2 c fresh raw corn kernels, 1/2 c cherry tomatoes, sliced Spanish onion. 1 tbsp olive oil, lemon & anchovy dressing snack: homemade granola bite snack (made with oats, pepitas, puffed rice, dried blueberries, nut butter, agave syrup & an egg white) Dinner: Broccoli & lentil soup with chia seeds (I usually go back for seconds & eat quite a lot of this) I am also not consuming alcohol, tea or coffee. Nothing but 2-3 litres of water a day. What do you think? Not enough calories or just adjusting? I didn't have a lot of caffine previously. Maybe 1 coffee a week & a cup of tea with milk & sugar. I clip out the tea only because of the sugar & milk. I can't stand to drink it black.
